Pop Singer Olivia Rodrigo Shows She Was There First in Emotional New Single “deja vu”
First she got her driver’s license, now Olivia Rodrigo is taking independent car rides down Malibu in the music video for her new single “deja vu”. On April 1st, the young pop singer dropped the follow up installment to her ex-lover-found-someone-new narrative after her debut single “driver’s license” completely blew up the streaming services and social media. However, the song is far from an April Fool’s Joke.
“Deja vu” is a powerful track where Olivia calls out her ex-lover for reusing all of the jokes, memories, and special acts that they used to do in their relationship. She sings, "So when you gonna tell her that we did that too?/ She thinks it's special/ But it's all re-used/ That was our place, I found it first/ I made the jokes you tell to her/ When she's with you,” to establish her place as the girl that came first. She ticks off a list of all of the memories that originated from her, asking “Do you get deja vu when she's with you?” in her breathy, soft vocals. As the song moves along, the sound gets fuller as does Olivia’s vocals. Eventually she starts belting out the lyrics “I know you get deja vu” to express her anger and envy towards the new woman with whom her ex has moved on.
The music video also reflects the emotions and the lyrics of the song by comparing Olivia Rodrigo to a lookalike character, meant to represent the second girl. Opening with Olivia driving down a road parallel to the ocean coast, wearing a headscarf and sunglasses, she looks carefree and unbothered. Then, a set of scenes show a side by side comparison of Olivia and the second girl doing the same things: running down to the ocean, eating strawberry ice cream, and donning a bright green dress, symbolizing the envious emotions projected through the lyrics.
The video hits a turning point where the lookalike girl acknowledges Olivia’s presence, showing that she is in fact, the unbothered one. The music video closes with Olivia smashing a set of TV’s that showed the comparisons between the two young women, wearing the same bright green dress as she gets all of her emotions out. The last TV screen shows the lookalike character driving in sunglasses and a headscarf down the coast, repeating the opening scene to show that the new girl is carefree and does not care for Olivia’s envy.
Overall, “deja vu” is certainly a song full of emotion, and not to mention talent, as Olivia has already proven to possess. If you have yet to see the music video or hear the song at all, you can view it here.
