Olivia Rodrigo’s Latest Single “Driver’s License” Came Out, and Fans Are Going Wild Over the Drama
Olivia Rodrigo has come a long way from her pre-teen years on her Disney Channel show Bizaardvark, and is now showing off her musical talents on Disney Plus’ High School the Musical The Musical The Series (say that title five times fast!). She also proves to be an incredibly proficient songwriter and lyricist, as shown by her original “All I Want”, which was one of the featured tracks for her show’s soundtrack and has achieved official gold status in the United States with over 500k sales.
Now, the young songwriter has grown both as a musician and as a person, which shows in her latest single “Driver’s License” that was released on Friday, January 8th. After posting a short snippet on her Instagram, she decided to officially release it due to the positive feedback form her audience. Rodrigo sings about how she got her driver’s license and reminisces on a lost relationship in which learning to drive was a sentimental part, saying “you were so excited for me to finally drive up to your house / but today I drove through the suburbs, crying ‘cause you weren’t around”. Fans were immediately drawn to the song by the evident pain and emotion in Olivia’s voice, and was astounded at how much talent the singer had at only 17 years old.
The most intriguing part about this song for fans is the alleged drama behind it. For some it may seem like a petty love triangle and high school drama, however, many fans of HSMTMTS and of Olivia Rodrigo herself have been very invested in the split between the young artist and her co-star on the show, Joshua Bassett. Apparently the two split up after Joshua grew tired of waiting for Olivia to come of age (she is 17 and he is currently 20), and is now with another former Disney Channel star and musician, Sabrina Carpenter. Fans believe ‘Drivers License” to be about this situation due to Olivia’s lyrics “and you’re probably with that blonde girl, who always made me doubt”, which was originally supposed to be “brunette girl” but was changed for the official release.
