Olivia Rodrigo’s New Single “good 4 u” is the Y2K Break Up Anthem You Need In Your Life

Olivia Rodrigo has done it again with yet another hit track of 2021. The eighteen-year-old singer dropped her newest single “good 4 u” off of her debut album “Sour” which is releasing this Friday, May 21st. The eleven track project also contains Rodrigo’s first two chart toppers, “driver’s license” and “deja vu”. Following the same post breakup theme as the previously released singles, “good 4 u” takes on a more angry and somewhat eerie persona.

The song itself gives off similar vibes to the breakup anthems we know and love from the early 2000’s. From the prominent electric guitar to the upbeat rhythmic bass line, and of course Olivia’s lyrics and killer vocals make this the ultimate Y2K bop. Olivia’s fans are already posting videos of themselves jamming out to angry lyrics, which call out an ex-lover for moving on and being apathetic to the way in which Olivia was hurt by the breakup. The lyrics throughout the verses and the chorus, specifically the post bridge chorus “good 4 u, you’re doing great out there without me/  baby, like a damn sociopath” bring out the aggression in Olivia’s voice and show her intense emotions.

The music video itself also makes references to a typical high school scenario, in which Rodrigo is the head cheerleader and “mean girl”. However, the scene takes a darker twist when she is shown putting on long, black leather gloves alongside the cheer uniform. The scenes become darker, showcasing Olivia singing in a flooded bedroom as the curtain is engulfed in flames, and ending with her immersed in a dark body of water at night.

The music video paints Olivia out to be the “crazy ex-girlfriend” with a vendetta against the one she was hurt by, however it focuses more on the psychopathic persona and even gives a few nods to the genre of horror or thriller. Some fans speculated that the music video alludes to the 2009 horror film “Jennifer’s Body” which features Megan Fox as Jennifer, the popular head cheerleader who gets possessed by a demon and eats the men at her high school.

Overall, if you’re looking for an upbeat, aggressive break up anthem to pull you out of your slump, or if you’re just looking for a new song to jam out to on your playlist, we highly recommend listening to “good 4 u” by Olivia Rodrigo. At such a young age, she is already making waves within her first year in the music industry, and we are excited to see more from this young talent.
