Lil Nas X not only sits atop the throne of Hell with his new single ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’, but also sits atop the music charts. With twenty thousand downloads and over 24 million streams, the “Old Town Roads” sensation knocked Justin Bieber’s song “Peaches” out of its top spot on Rolling Stones’ Top 100 Songs this week.

The popularity of Lil Nas X’s new branding began in February with its first appearance in a Super Bowl commercial, followed by its official release with a music video that became an instant attention grabber. Understandably so, as the rapper shocked his audience by giving the Devil a lap dance before killing him and taking Hell’s throne in the video. Lil Nas X also released the 666 pair of “Satan Shoes” that gained media attention, both for its controversial context and the lawsuit against Nike, in which the rapper was accused of trademark infringement. Sales for the product have currently halted, however the popularity stemming from this conflict is only helping to catapult Lil Nas X to the top spots on the charts due to increased sales and streaming.

The song also hit No. 1 on Billboard’s UK singles chart. However, it currently battles against Nathan Evans’ “Wellerman” sea shanty to maintain the top spot this week. ‘Montero’ is leading the First Look chart, which analyzes a song’s popularity based on its streaming and sales success within its first 48 hours of release, however “Wellerman” is closely behind by only 500 sales.

Don’t let the competition fool you, though. The publicity for this single has yet to slow down. Montero has already garnered a new Tik Tok trend, in which creators feature themselves in front of a green screen background trying to reason with a higher power to let them into the gates of Heaven. Their dialogue gets interrupted by the audio of Montero fading in and out, resembling Lil Nas X sliding past on his pole (as referenced from the music video). The rapper has also continued making television appearances such as on Saturday Night Live in which he made headlines once more for giving a lap dance to a man dressed in a costume resembling God.

Overall, Lil Nas X is no stranger to bending the rules, and it has proven to serve his music well so far. If you have not listened to ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name)’ yet, you can view the music video here to see exactly what has got music streamers and the media so riled up.
